How we work it out

Maps, messaging and email use very little. Social feeds and photographs use more. Video calls and streaming use the most by a distance, and sharing your connection with a laptop roughly doubles a day's use. We add a margin on top, because running out in another country is a much worse afternoon than finishing a trip with a gigabyte spare.

This is a guide, not a measurement. Your own habits matter more than any average. If you are between two sizes, most destinations let you top up from My eSIMs without reinstalling anything, so starting on the smaller plan is usually safe.
