Getting around the island needs a phone that works: Gojek for a motorbike taxi, Google Maps for temples buried down jungle lanes, data for villa check-in details and restaurant bookings. Hotel Wi-Fi does not reach the rice terraces of Ubud or the cliffs at Uluwatu, and home-carrier roaming here burns money fast.
Indonesia's main carriers are Telkomsel, XL Axiata and Indosat Ooredoo, and Telkomsel has by far the widest reach across the archipelago. Bali's tourist areas are well covered, but signal thins out in the mountains and on the smaller islands. If Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan or the Gilis are on your route, check Telkomsel's own coverage map against your exact stops before you buy.
Gojek, Maps, WhatsApp and Instagram are constant companions here, so Bali is moderately data-hungry. A fortnight of normal use sits comfortably on 5 to 10GB. A month working remotely from Canggu or Seminyak wants considerably more, and the larger plans run long enough to cover a whole season of visits.
Buying a local SIM at the airport is cheaper than roaming, but it means queueing and fiddling with a SIM tray after a long flight. Install the eSIM at home while you have Wi-Fi, keep your own SIM in the phone for calls, and order your first Gojek before you have left the terminal.
